Downstairs at Mother is proud to announce that on Tuesday 25th September we will host both the award presentation by Don McCullin, photojournalist and Ian Parry Trustee, and final exhibition of all the shortlisted entries for the Ian Parry Scholarship 2012 - curated by Rebecca McClelland.
Ian Parry was a talented young photojournalist at the very beginning of his career when he was tragically killed whilst on assignment for The Sunday Times in December 1989, covering the downfall of the Romanian dictator Nicolae Ceausescu. He was only 24 years old.
Aidan Sullivan, then Picture Editor, and Ian’s friends and family created the Ian Parry Scholarship order to build something positive from such a tragic death.
Each year the Ian Parry Scholarship holds an international photographic competition for young photographers who are either attending a full-time photographic course or are under 24. Entrants must submit a portfolio and a brief synopsis of a project they would undertake if they won the scholarship. The prize consists of £3,500 towards their chosen assignment £500 to those awarded Highly Commended and Commended.
The main image and first three in the gallery is by the 2012 Winner Adrian Fussell, and the final two images in the gallery are by Commended photographer Hilde Mesics Kleven.
The exhibition will be on display weekdays from 2-4pm at Downstairs at Mother until 5 October (excluding Thursday 4 October).
